“ Trying to find the right words, to say goodbye to one of my all-time favorite authors is so hard. Having just finished my annual re-read of the Night World books, I did some research to see if there was ever an update to Strange Fate. At first, reading the book was not only finished but going to be TWO separate books instead of one, along with a third adult book, Lullaby had me so excited there were actual butterflies! As I continued to read up on the latest news my heart sank, to discover that we’d lost Ms. Smith so recently after she’d become active with fans again is just heartbreaking to me. When Strange Fate comes out, I will buy every copy I can get my hands on and gift them to as many of my young nieces and nephews as I can. We MUST carry on her legacy by introducing her work to new young readers.
Ms. Smith’s characters are such inspirational individuals I can not imagine a generation missing out on getting to know them. May we all catch a glimpse of Ms. Smith in our re-readings. I am so grateful this beautiful amazing souled author shared her gift with the world. Rest in peace and love.”—Corrine P.

“ Omg! I’m so devastated to hear about L.J. Smith’s passing. I’ve been a fan since I was a teen and her books helped me get through the rough times both at school and at home. She will be so missed by her readers. I might be a little out of place, as I was never a “super-fan” of books in general, I was never big on reading BUT I still have my 90’s L.J. Smith books, boxed up in my attic and if there ever felt like a right time for a re-read, now, feels like it. I look forward to saying hello, again, to the worlds and characters, L.J. Smith created, that I loved so much as a child. I pray, the angels carry you home. Goodbye, for now, L.J. Smith, I will see you again, back on page 1.”—Anita LeeAnne

“ I still carry all of your characters around in my head, I guess now, I must also make room to carry you L.J. Smith, around in my heart. Such a wonderful, brilliant writer, gone, too soon.”—Kirsten Andrews

“ How childish I feel in the fact that this feels so unfair of the universe. To take this beloved soul and author from us, when we just got her back feels so cruel and painful. She will live forever through her works, she has attainted immortality in written words. As so many others have said, you will never be forgotten, and forever loved. I love you, Lisa!”—Brandi Mullins

“ Like so many other fans, I was shocked and gutted to hear of Lisa’s recent passing. I’ve always loved reading, but her books were always so much more. Her characters were always so much more. Her gift of storytelling and compelling you to believe in her worlds was so much more. I’d love to share a quick story about how Lisa’s works have impacted me:
I wrote to Lisa in 2009 as a recent graduate of complementary medicine as I wanted her to know that her books contributed to my love of nature and healing. I never expected a response. Especially, one that was witty, funny and personal. I’ve kept that email—I always will.
Lisa’s gift of storytelling and her own story of resilience has affected generations of people, all across the world. I’m now about to finish a PhD focusing on chronic pain, and I know that Lisa’s lessons in resilience, grace and hope, helped me get through this. She truly is a timeless inspiration and to those who knew her personally, I can only imagine your loss. My deepest condolences. Requiescat in pace. Gratia aeterna, gratiarum aeternarum.”—Isabelle

“ Rest in peace and power lovely. Thank you for your inspiration, creativity, and words throughout all these years. Like others, your writing has been a huge part of my childhood. You’ve left a true mark in this world. May you be in a better place L.J. Smith.”—NT

“ Dear Lisa, I just realized today you passed away, I know you wont be reading this message, if only I had written before, just to thank you, for all the amazing stories you wrote. The Night World series, The Vampire Diaries, Forbidden Game, Dark Visions, etc. Those stories inspired me to become a writer. It would’ve been great meeting you and asking you all kinds of questions about your work. But now it’s too, late. So, the only thing to say, is Thank you, Lisa, for your stories and for allowing me to escape to a magical world and have the joy of reading. Thank you. Rest in Peace, your stories will always live on.”—Jay Flowers

“ Lisa, I was just checking in, because I have been waiting ten years for Strange Fate…only to see that you had finished it in December…and passed away March 8th…I truly, was heartbroken to find that out. You are my favorite author and always will be. My excitement for these books, has been diminished by your passing. Rest in peace…Thank you, for your amazing works of art, that you have left us.”—Savannah Blake

“ L.J. Smith is the reason I fell in love with not just reading, but words, themselves. All the different emotions conveyed; some unsaid, so many unspoken but still hanging in there in the air between the lines. The way an author like L.J. Smith, pulled you into her incredibly vibrant and realistic worlds—no matter how fantastical…they felt real. Her worlds are still real to me. I carry her characters and their loves, losses, griefs, battles and triumphs, with me around in my head everyday. They became a part of me. They built me. I think a lot of fans feel the same. She helped create us, the versions of us that are still here; to tell their own tales of life, love and survival. She is alive and well still lighting up millions of hears all around the globe. Lisa, you are so forever loved beyond measure. Goodbye, for now Angel. We’ll all see you on the next page…”—The Lost and Found

“ I’m not sure how to start this off. I just want to jump in and say thank you, for everything. I am so, so, so, grateful for all of your words and love growing up. I adored all of your characters and read so many books you have written. I’m so sad to hear that you aren’t here anymore, but I hope if you are able to, that you can see and feel how much I, among many others, love your work and the love you put into it.
We really love your dedication and imagination and I for one would not be who I am today without the worlds you built and the love that dwelled within them.
I hope you and your family and friends are well and know, I love you. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart to the top, for everything. Warmest Regards.”—Katie

“ Life as we know it, is just a story of hundreds and thousands of other stories; where upon a pinch of universe is the main spice included. My dearest Lisa, YOU have been weaving a tale, hinting at the mighty working of the tapestry of the Universe. A spell thus began with the very first word you have written when you started on this. And wherefore did I get tangled within the web of magic, I don’t know. And I just found out that finally the spell gets to get completed with your blessing and I’ll be liberated. The yarns of spell you weave hence would be my salvation.
Blessed I was to be when it all began,
Blessed I am to witness the end afterall,
Blessed you’ll be, daughter of the mother and man
To have fixed the spell, thus undone myself withal”—Siraj Nira

“ May she be resting and at peace, and may her loved ones hold strong in this in this painful moment. L.J. Smith was a truly a wonderful author. I will always cherish the memories her books created; for it means I will be, forever, thankful for her talent and passion. Rest in peace.”—Diana Centeno

“ L.J. Smith’s work, is what started me on my own writing path. Her Night World books got me through some tough times in my teens. I am, so sorry, that she is gone, but she is going to live on in the hearts of her fans forever.”—Nicole Stacy

“ Lisa Jane smith helped sculpt me as a person. Her books helped me through my pre-teens, and all the way through high school. She created a love of fantasy, the supernatural and the unknown. She gave, myself, my friends and young girls all over; female leading characters who were intelligent, loving, and strong, but showed vulnerability, without being perceived as weak for it.
The Night World and The Forbidden Game especially, were both worlds, I would frequently get lost in. And even at the age of thirty-seven, are still comfort reads to me. Thank you, Lisa, for the stories, the emotions, and for the wonderful worlds, that even as an adult, I still find comfort in. You will not be forgotten and you will truly be missed. Love, to Lisa’s friends and family; and to the people, like myself, who received so much comfort from her stories. Sleep well, Lisa, Blessed Be.”—Vanz Williams

“ Lisa, (L.J). Smith, cliche or not, was in fact, a beacon in the night. She was a watchtower of injustice, a lighthouse. Creating and spinning light and fantasy on the darkest waters, singing her literary song, calling out to the lost of us. Gently, bringing us to shore, where you were safe and sound, back in the warmth of her love. I pray for her family, partner, friends, colleagues and fans alike, who are now adrift without her guiding light. I love to see fans and friends a-like come-together in the FB group. I see so many, offering to help others, I see Lisa’s spirit alive and well there. I see new moderators checking in on others, strangers jumping in, to just be a good listener. Helping each other find out of print or rare books. All in the shared spirit and love we all have for Lisa.”—October Rain

“ In Mystic Falls’ twilight, where shadows play. A storyteller’s voice fell silent yesterday. L.J. Smith, weaver of secrets and night, left behind a legacy, a literary light. Her words, like vampires, immortal and bold, lived on entrancing readers, young and old. The Vampire Diaries, a world of forbidden love, a realm of mystery, where hearts rise above. Though her pen now rests, her stories remain. A testament to the power of imagination’s refrain. In the darkness, her characters still roam, guiding readers through the shadows, to the heart’s unknown home.”—Damon S.

“ News of L.J. Smith’s passing is such a shock! I just learned of it ten minutes ago; when I was looking her up after seeing her looks referenced in a YouTube video. I read The Vampire Diaries when they first came out, way back when I was in 7th grade. They were such a game changer for me, because I was so used to YA novels where the heroine was awkward, passive, hapless, and ineffectual. I usually read mystery and adventure novels to get away from that type of character.
Then along came Elena Gilbert, sophisticated and fascinating. She was NOT like the other YA girls; She had interesting problems and she had to use her brains and resourcefulness to deal with them. Elena was a character you’d normally see on the periphery of YA novels, the one the awkward heroine one looks up to, or fears but you never saw anything from Elena’s point-of-view, until L.J. Smith came along and made it so. Back then, only the first four novels existed in that series, and my friends and I, devoured them. That series is one of the books that set me on the path to becoming a writer myself.
I was heartbroken when I found out about the horrible work-for-hire contract that she had. To have one’s creations ripped away had to be soul crushing, and I cried for her. I was so impressed that she managed to carry on and began working on Strange Fate. And now, I’ve learned she’d finished it! She kept writing! I rejoice that she experienced the triumph of finishing the Night World books! Lisa Jane Smith was an inspiration, as a reader and a writer, both. May she rest in peace.”—Jamie Smith

“ It’s so sad to hear about her passing, I was really excited when I found her new site back in December. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones. I first found out about Night World/Vampire Diaries about ten to fifteen years ago, I think? It has been a while. I loved Night World, I listened to the audiobooks of them all from my library. And sometime, when I am able to get them, I’d love to listen to her other books and own all of her books in audiobook format one day. I am wondering if her new books will be given as audiobooks too, as me and my friend, who has very bad vision, really enjoyed listening to them together.”—Janelle Schmidt

“ I lost my grandmother around eleven or twelve years-old and dove headfirst into reading for as escape. The Night World book series was my first intro into the supernatural YA, and I will always hold a special place in my heart, for bringing me peace during that hard time in my life. Thank you, for giving me an healthy outlet ; so, I didn’t try to cope in unhealthy ways like many other young girls in my poor little town. Every one of my sisters has read them. (After, being thoroughly warned of the fury I would have if they were ruined.) I don’t know if they are still in print but I would love to purchase them again and hold out hope for the conclusion of the series. Thank you, Lisa.”—Anonymous participant

“ Your Night World book series was the first series I read through, without pause. I found the 9 books in their three volume set at a Goodwill when I was thirteen and it changed my life. I’m a writer and screenwriter now. I still talk about your series to anyone and everyone. My first adaptation script will be your work. I will do my hardest to get the rest of your work to the silver screen. Rest well, L.J., my biggest inspirational author.”—Bria Gaffney

“ New to this group, I just joined today. I also, wanted to come on and give my condolences to L.J. Smith who was such a creative marvel, illustrating such beautifully detailed worlds for us to enjoy and immerse ourselves in. I was only a middle-schooler trudging through the library one day; when I stumbled upon the Night World series. This series, I can say, really grew my love back into reading! I give my thanks, to L.J. Smith for writing these incredible stories that are so vivid and amazing, and wish her lot’s of love as a longtime fan in the community.”—Emily Chou

“ I will never forget the first time I read an L.J. Smith book. It was 2010, and like how I discovered all books in high school, a friend lent me the first Night World volume. That’s part of the joy L.J. brought and will still bring to future readers. Passing the books around to your friends and talking about how much you love it and being in the community with fellow readers. I was immediately hooked on the Night World, and the series brought me so much joy and comfort in my teen years.
I still think about the Night World often, along with the other amazing stories L.J. created. She gifted me escapism when needed, and inspired me to write my own stories. She was a light in this world and her joy and love can always be felt when reading her words, and I will cherish that forever. Rest in peace L.J. Thank you, for all you’ve contributed to the world. You made it better.”—Becca Tynes

“ I am so sad that I missed this contest but so happy that the series got finished before Ms. Smith left us. She was an absolutely amazing writer with a heart of gold. Her Night World series was absolutely wonderful and exciting to read and taught me that being a little different is a good thing! This series brought so much joy, I fell in love with Ash. He was my first “book boyfriend.” I wanted to be as cool and brave as Rashel and Keller a.k.a. Raksha. As well as being smart like Mary-Lynnette.
I also really enjoyed Secret Circle as well! And even though I just found out about Strange Fate being finished on the same day as finding out about Ms. Smith and feeling very sad about it. I also feel as if she left us with a wonderful gift. She will be forever missed, and I for one, am glad I got to know her through her books. Thank you, L.J. Smith, for all the wonderful worlds you gave us.”—Brandy Geary

“ I am a 45 year old woman living in the UK. you don’t know me but I wanted to send you a message to say thank you. I escaped a horrible abusive life and ran away as a 19 year old in part because of your books. They taught me to be strong and fight for the life I deserved. I found my soul mate and your characters live forever in my heart. thank you and I will see you one day x until then fly high.”—Sophia Simrick

“ I just want to express my love and gratitude for Lisa. I first came across Lisa’s work when I was nine years old, in 2009. I instantly became obsessed. I modeled my whole look and aesthetic off of her work. My name Faye, is inspired by her character Faye Chamberlain. Lisa’s work was my go-to for not only entertainment, but was also my escape from reality. When I had a bad day at school, being bullied, her Secret Circle series was where I turned. My love of vampires and witches was from her work. My favorite crystal in witchcraft was because of her work.
Lisa truly inspired me, to be the witch I was meant to be, and to not fear or hide what I loved, because if she could be a best selling author for the things I loved, then I absolutely wasn’t alone, or weird. I truly did eat, sleep and breathe her work. I have a Secret Circle sigil tattoo, and my name was legally changed to Faye, I’ve done many cosplays through the years. I’ve made many friends over our love of Lisa’s work.
I am truly heartbroken over the news of her passing, and I sincerely hope that Lisa, her friends and family, know, she was very inspiring, and forever will be loved and idolized. She’ll never be forgotten and neither will her work.
I’ll forever carry Lisa’s work with me in life, as her work is what made me, me. The Faye that I am, wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Lisa, and I am forever grateful, for Lisa and her work. May she rest in peace.”—Love, Faye Delune

“ I read news of your death and it left my sisters and I heartbroken. Your books; Secret Circle, Vampire Diaries and especially Night World were and still are, our favorite books to read. These books form the best part of our childhood and gave us an escape from reality when things got too hard. The very first book I read was Huntress from Night World, I borrowed it from my college library in 2008, I was twelve then.
I loved the book so much; I gave it to both of my younger sisters to read it. They loved it too and told me to bring another one, which was Dark Angel. We fell more in love reading the other Night World books and other series; Secret Circle and Vampire Diaries. We even bought them in the French version. Some of them are still with me and the others are with my sisters, who are abroad and we have re-read them multiple times. All to say that your books are a treasured part of our lives, you are and will remain one of our favorite authors. Thank you, for everything, and may you rest in peace.”—Jenita and her younger sisters.

“ I’d like to thank L.J. Smith for ending Ash and Mary-Lynnette the way she did. Here is Mary-Lynnette, a young woman who is so sure of herself and confident, that she tells her soulmate, to go away, and make amends for all of the bad he had done, before he knew her. More than that, as a motivating factor, she wanted to finish high school and pursue a higher education. I appreciated her doing that, because I think it is so few and far between, where a romantic heroine doesn’t choose to just drop everything, to be with a guy. That she doesn’t just say, “oh, well, he was bad to them, but now, he won’t be bad to me, so that’s fine.” Even, if that guy is her soulmate.
Mary-Lynnette does not lose nor give up her agency. If anything she pushes Ash to be someone better. To literally do better. To be someone deserving of her. Thank you, L.J. Smith, for showing us that we are worth it, and that those we let into our hearts should work to be worthy of us.”—Carmen Del Castillo

“ It deeply saddens me to know such a wonderful writer has left us. The first books I ever read of her’s was The Forbidden Game trilogy and I went from there. The first four TVD books are, and always will be, my favorites of her’s with the Night World book series a close second. I loved the way she wrote her female characters and the trio of Meredith, Elena and Bonnie, have shaped the way I write a good deal of my female characters. L.J. Smith was truly an inspirational woman and she will be greatly missed.”—Nafeesah Smith

“ I’ve recently found out that one of my top favorite authors has passed and I’m absolutely devastated. I’ve been a life-long fan for about twenty years and it’s heartbreaking to know she is gone. I loved her. I loved her books. I even had the honor of talking to her a few times and winning a contest on her forum back in 2011. Her and her work, meant so much to me.
I just called my mom and we talked for a while, reminiscing on the books of her’s that we had read together; and all the time we spent together just because of these amazing books bringing us closer. Lisa deserved so much better. Rest in peace, Lisa. You will always be remembered. Let’s read one of her many books today, in her honor. RIP Miss L.J. Smith, you will always be remembered, always, I wish the world had been kinder…”—Artemis Destler Ziebert

“ To say goodbye, I invited everyone in the group to try this visualization with me. It’s a warm summer night, and we find ourselves in the kitchen of a somewhat old house. We can see the shape of a full moon, out a small window above the dishwasher. There are fireflies shining like Christmas lights, near the glass. There are no harsh electric lights, only the warm glow of votive candles scattered around the room. The scents of sandalwood incense and roses embrace our noses. It seems fantastic and impossible; but each of us enters and has our own space in the kitchen.
Who are we? You, might ask…you already know the answer: We are our children and teenagers who read Lisa’s books late into the night. Those who didn’t have friends but did have her books. Those young people who yearned with all their might, to be vampires, or cast spells, to belong. We are those adults who fondly remember her, or who only started reading her a couple of years ago. We are those who emailed our favorite publishers asking for updates, we are those who went to every bookstore looking for those books we were missing. We are each and every one of them.
And if, we are all here, it’s not to say “Goodbye,’” to Lisa, but to say, “See you soon,” because the books and images she generated in us all, will continue to vibrate—like a kind of eternal music—that moves our hearts and puts us in tune. This is the product of the love of a woman, who has dedicated her entire life to the struggle of writing with vision and passion. A woman, who now appears to us like an angel in the backyard of this old house, where we find ourselves brought together. Crossing the kitchen door and descending the wooden stairs.
We see Lisa, as a light, as a flame, surrounded by Damon, Stefan and Elena, Bonnie, Meredith, Matt, Gillian, Cassie and Adam, Diana and Deborah, Faye and Melanie, Chris and Doug, Laurel and Suzan, Caroline and Sage, Gabriel and Kaitlyn, Rob and Anna, Lewis, Jenny, Julian, Tom and Audrey, Dee and Micheal, Zach and Summer, Claudia, Alys, Charles and Janie, Sarah, Kierlan and Mal, Poppy and James, Mary-Lynnette and Ash, Thea and Eric, David, Quinn and Rashel, Hannah and Thierry, Morgead and Jez, Maggie and Delos, Galen and Keller and many others. Lisa is escorted by each and every one of her characters; who will remain with us as treasured images because each of your stories, dear Lisa, are YOUR eternity.
Thank you, for saving the lives of so many of us, for the smiles, for the sadness, generated by finishing one of your novels. For the eagerness to read more stories, for the laughter, for the interactions, for pushing us to follow our dreams, for each of your words that have made history. The admiration I have for you seems to grow greater every day, the love and passion you left in writing has created a beautiful community: your readers.
Every September 4th, and every March 8th we will remember you, incredibly a date shared by International Women’s Day, given the strength of your female characters, it feels fitting. You never left, and you never will. You will be in each of those images you created; that now vibrate in our hearts. You are in those books, that will be passed on from generation to generation. You will magically appear in each of the words, with which, some of us writers will shape in our own stories. We were always with you, and you were and will always be with us.
L.J. Smith’s novels are for introverts, for the dreamers, for the weirdos, and the class witches; for those who paint futures and those who sculpt narratives where, in the conflictive relationship between good and evil, the struggle and defense of a friendship that can stand up to any kind of adversity always emerge. That is the greatest lesson her novels left us, and they now seem to be the silver cord that unites us to Lisa and makes her our soulmate…because, after all, L.J. Smith’s stories are, and always have been, and will be, for lovers and for those who view life and fiction with compassionate and tender eyes.”—Victor Lanatti

“ You were, and still are, my favorite author, all these decades later. When I found out about your passing; I burst out in tears. In my old room at my parents house, the glow-in-the-dark star stickers that came with the first Night World book, are still on the ceiling. I’ve introduced new generations to your works, as they have stood the test of time.
Beyond your writing talents; you were a kind and thoughtful person, making time and creating connections with your fans. Old fans, new fans and those still to come, will truly miss your presence and the hope of more work to come. Thank you, for sharing the characters you created with us. Rest in peace, Lisa Jane Smith.”—Sapphire

“ I was so sad and shocked to hear the news today. Wherever you are, I’d like you to know; that we would have treasured and shared so much love and so much excitement with you for Strange Fate. “ You were such a huge part of my childhood. I read your books when I was in middle school in the mid-2000’s and it devastated me when I read the news today. Your writing was always a comfort for me on the hardest days. And when I was pregnant with both my children, I would read your books to them in my stomach. Your books written by you. Because it was your writing that helped me fall in love with writing poetry that had similar themes to your stories. I will never forget you and cannot wait to introduce your original books, to my children, as well. May, you rest in peace.”—Kassandra Seabolt

“ I am at a loss for words which would be a first for me…a dear friend, a bright star, shall now shine over us, forever…Lisa’s world’s took me to my joyful place, taking me away from the constant D.V. at home, at the hands of my biological father. I would leave school and find solace inside my bedroom with her book series and lose myself with Ash, Julian, Gabriel, Mary-Lynnette, Keller and Jenny, just to name a few…I visited the library regularly to re-request her popular books and sadly could only afford them from the library sale section in the beginning. I am forty this year, and have a healthy collection of Lisa’s books. Her kindness and generosity knew no bounds…
Our emails and messages will always stay with me including the gifts she sent me. The sheer joy her works brought me, must be felt by readers worldwide. A piece of my heart and soul will always be with her, she will forever be surrounded by our love. The power of her pen allowed us to escape beyond pages and our cramped worlds…In reality at the time I found Lisa’s books, “love—(was something that) changes.” Love equalled pain to me. However, reading and dreaming about these brave heroes brought closure to me and I realized, redemption is possible…and I began to believe in love, solely due to the Power of Lisa’s Words.”—Sophia Jan

“ I can’t express how sad I am to know that L.J. has passed away. Her Night World series is my Roman Empire. I have loved them since I read them in middle school. I actually did a book project on Soulmate, in my junior year of high school, that my teacher has kept has kept to this day.”—Katt Batt

“ I picked up a copy of The Vampire Diaries, The Awakening, from a shelf at Walmart in 1991. I was fourteen and already a voracious reader, but that book…the characters just walked right off the page into my living room, as I read it in one sitting. I was so captivated, I bought all the others as soon as they were released; and then felt the same about her Secret Circle and Forbidden Game series. L.J. Smith was an auto-buy for me throughout high school and college. I passed the books I still had, down to my own daughters, when they became teenagers. I re-bought the ones I’d loaned to friends and had never gotten back. I absolutely loved, getting to discuss these stories and characters with my girls and will be forever thankful to L.J. for giving me that experience and so many hours of wonderful reading. May, she rest in peace, never forgotten.”—Lyndee Stephens Walker

“ The Forbidden Game was and still is my favorite book series. I remember discovering her books with The Vampire Diaries during summer break before my junior year of high school. I sought out every book of her’s that I could find at the time. Though, it would be a few years of searching used book stores, finally having adult-money and access to eBay, before I got the ones that were out of print in the 00’s. I loaned books out to my best friends in high school. I hid the books under my desk in the storage cubbies to re-read during boring class lectures. My friends and I, even learned what letters the Elder Futhark runes represented and wrote our notes to each other in runes because we love TFG so much!
I wrote her a fan letter and was thrilled to have gotten one back. I was already a published author myself, but my inner seventeen-year old lived in that moment. I still have a printed copy of the response protected in my safe with important documents. Like many others, I watched and waited for any word on the completion and publication of Strange Fate, and it is such a bittersweet thing that she worked on it, until the very end, and she did finish it. I will be there on release day when it hits the shelves. Thank you, Lisa, for your beautifully crafted stories and remarkable characters. The world will never be the same without you, but you’ll never be forgotten.”—Victoria Miller

“ Like many people, I first came to know Lisa through her books. I was enthralled by the female characters, that were more than just a pretty distraction for their male counterparts. They were witty, smart, and fiercely protective of the people they cared about. Qualities that also, describe Lisa. After reading all of her books and everything I could find out about her online, I began to realize what a truly wonderful person she was. I wrote my first ever piece of fan mail and even joked, that I thought we would be friends, if we knew each other in real life. I was surprised, by how easily I poured my heart out in that first email. I never imagined, that she would write back, but she did.
Soon, the email exchanges lead to hours-long phone conversations. From the first phone call, she made me feel like I was the most important person in the world in that moment. We talked about everything and nothing. We supported each other through the hard times and celebrated the good times. It was a honor to call Lisa my friend. She was the first person I would call, whenever something big happened. Even while battling her own illness, she found time and strength to support me when I lost my mom. That is just the type of selfless person Lisa was. She lived by the motto, “Die a hero, or not at all.” She was a hero to many of us. I only wish she could have chosen, to never die at all.” —Christina Crowley

“ L.J. Smith helped form me, as a child. My mother introduced me to her after reading the first Night World book at about eleven-years old and I never looked back! Particularly, The Forbidden Game, which I found in the eighth grade, was very impactful; to a young girl, dealing with losing everything she knew. My beloved pets, my home, my first heartbreak, and dealing with the aftermath of my father having a stroke.
The words, “I am my own master,”—have gotten me through countless pains and losses, and when things are going well. L.J. Smith, is one of the best writers of all-time and I just hope, that her loved ones know how much she truly helped others, with her gifts.”—Becca Elmore

“ I loved her Night World series. I still have the books on paperback, that have the three stories in them. Even though I’m in my forties, I still enjoy reading them. Her Secret Circle books, I still have those, too. L.J. Smith will definitely be missed, she is the reason I got into paranormal. Thoughts and prayers, go out to her family, friends and all whom she touched and brought joy to, with her writing.”—Jax Chadbone

“ I’m honestly, so devastated, I’m really glad Lisa was able to come back and communicate with fans again, even for a short while. I’m excited for Strange Fate, but it’s so sad that Lisa wont be here for it. Just so lost for words right now.”—Sudawan Corness

“ I found a few books from the Night World series, in the library at my high school as a young teenager and managed to collect all of Lisa Jane Smith’s 80’s and 90’s era books over the next few years. Even in the early 2000’s, some of these were quite hard to find, but so worth the search! The Forbidden Game, is one of my all-time favorites by any author.”—Jamie Smith

“ I’m still tremendously saddened by the loss of Lisa. Her forum gave me an outlet and a family when I was losing my own. Through the community that she created, she inadvertently taught me the value of what genuine family means, not what my family was. I connected with Dark Visions and Gabriel’s story. Lisa helped give words to what I had been feeling, my entire life, and as I go through another bump in the road, I remember her stories, and the love she had for her fans, who she treated like extended family. Thank you, for all the laughs, all the memories, and all the opportunities Lisa. I don’t believe you would have wanted us to cry but to laugh instead, to find the joy in the darkest places of the world, just as your beloved characters did.” —Nyx Frances

“ L.J. Smith is one of my very favorite authors. As a teen, I found the Night World books and fell in love. I went on to read the Vampire Diaries and was very quickly reading every one of her books, that I could get my hands on. I am now, in my forties, and still go back and re-read her stories with the same enjoyment. I was so saddened to hear of her passing and know that she will be greatly missed by her fans.”—Elizabeth Sharp

“ My heart is hurting for her friends and family. The Booktok community, and literary community is in shock and super upset. L.J. Smith had helped many of us through our childhood. I first found her work at a Barnes and Nobles on a class trip in Michigan back in high school. The first book I remember ever reading of hers, was the Night World series volume one. That’s when I devoured the rest of the series. I recently started collecting The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle. She will definitely be missed.”—Amanda Marie Lowery

“ In March of this year, I discovered the new website, and I was so happy I almost cried with joy. Seeing that my beloved author had returned, that everything was okay, after so many years of absence, and that she had a new message for us,—it was amazing. I have loved her work since the sixth grade. When I was bullied at school, I would hide in the school library or the school hallways, reading Night World and all those stories about brave heroines. I can’t put into words how much L.J. Smith’s work has influenced me. Today, even though I never knew her personally, I am devastated by the news we have received. I can’t stop thinking about it. Her work will always be important to me.”—Sylwia Farynska

“ It feels so strange to be saying goodbye to L.J. Smith… I first discovered one of her books when I was nine-years old, in 1995. It was The Strange Power, the first book in the Dark Visions trilogy. I was having a very hard time in my life—being shuffled between relatives and finding myself a bullied outcast, wherever I went. The protagonist, Kaitlyn Fairchild’s school experience mirrored mine and this book was deeply meaningful to me. Over the next few years, I started gobbling up all her books that I could find. To be honest, my “real life,” was still quite hard. The LJS fandom was my lifeline. These books got me through so many hard times, I can’t even tell you.
I know to most people they would probably seem like simple YA supernatural romance or fantasy, but those of us who love Lisa’s work, know that theres something *more*, beneath her simple prose that keeps pulling us back. Lisa inspired me to endure, to always try to improve myself, but also to embrace and accept my “flaws,” as part of who “I am. And…She did, in fact, create some of the sexiest and most compelling characters in supernatural fiction!!”—Lynae Zebest

“ Nothing really dies as long as its not forgotten.”—L.J. Smith These words are so sad now; For anyone that knows me, have known how much I have loved The Vampire Diaries book series from a young age. I can’t believe she’s gone. I know she had up and down health battles. She recently went back and forth to the hospital because of pneumonia. At least, she’s at peace now. Lisa, I swear when Strange Fate comes out, I among your legions of fans, will treasure it always.”–Samantha Sebuck

“ Such a wonderful writer and person gone too soon. At a point, when I nearly gave up on writing, I was around the forum where I met Lisa and many like-minded readers; who gave me encouragement and advice, on writing. Thank you, Lisa, for writing brilliant books, that I could always escape into, and for having the forum where I managed to meet the lovely people/readers, who were a joy to talk to. I’ll always, be grateful for that.”—Elayne Tan

“ I just wanted to take a moment to express how much I absolutely adored L.J. Smith and her Vampire Diaries series. Her stories and characters meant everything to me, and I’m deeply saddened by her passing. She created a world that so many of us fell in love with, and her legacy will live on through her words and the impact she had on her readers. Her books truly changed my life forever. They shaped me into the person I am today. Her characters, their struggles, and their emotions, felt so real, and they became a part of me. The Vampire Diaries wasn’t just a series—it was a world I could escape into, a place where I felt understood. I can’t even put into words how much her writing meant to me.
I also adored her other books—they were absolutely excellent. I always looked forward to any news about their continuation, hoping for more of her beautiful storytelling. But The Vampire Diaries was my all-time favorite. No other series has ever meant as much to me as that one. Sending love to everyone who was touched by her stories, and especially to her family. Her words inspired and captivated so many…her legacy will live on in the hearts of her readers.”—Sara Ferenc

“Heartbroken to hear about Lisa. She was one of my favorite authors. I have all of my original release books, plus several overseas editions. I was in an online fan site for her in the 90’s and am still in touch with several people from there. One member made soundtracks, for all of her trilogies, that I still love.”—Lesley JoAnne

“ I found L.J. Smith’s books when I was in high school and was immediately hooked. The Secret Circle and Night World had my heart from the first page. I spent hours reading and re-reading each of them and being drawn into the world she created. Picturing in my mind, each character, each scene. Even, now, Night World has a special place on my bookshelf and I read the series at least once per year.”—Rebecca Jade

“ Bittersweet seeing that she announced that she had finally completed Strange Fate and she was back to running contests for her fans again. I was lucky enough to win one of her contests back-in-the-day and the ring I got, I still treasure. She was pretty raw at the time from having TVD taken away from her. There were several of us that dug up old fan art from all over, mostly from Deviant Art, and shared it with her to show and remind her how special her writing was. I’m sad that I missed the chance to interact with her again and remind her just how amazing and special her works were. There are a handful of times I have physically had tears fall, from a public figure’s passing. After seeing the family’s obituary and the one from NYT, I shed a few tears today.
Thank you, for helping me turn into the strong woman I am today, by portraying strong female characters in your in your works. Thank you, for showing me that empathy for others makes you stronger. Thank you, for having characters that faced adversity and never gave up on what they believed in. Thank you, for showing the power of true friendships. Thank you, for interacting with your fans and showing us love. The gifts you gave this world, will assure you will never be forgotten. We, your fans, love and will miss you. Thank you, L.J. Smith. ”—Michelle Ironcity

“ As we gather here and in Lisa’s Official Facebook group we mourn the loss of a legend. I have struggled to find the right words, like most of you; because Lisa was not only an extraordinarily gifted and talented writer, but also a very dear friend. She was a master cartographer of the heart, mapping intricate landscapes of love, loss, adversity and triumph. Her writing draws people in, pulling them away from the hardships of their lives. Many, found Lisa’s books, at the worst points in their lives. Some, my much younger self included, found shelter in her books, while standing on the edge of a cliff; weathering storms we couldn’t have survived on our own.
As a once, brutally-bullied teen, I found myself enamored by the way her characters came to life and embraced you. As a child, I couldn’t have imagined, ever having any friends, that could have been better friends, than those characters had been…and then, I met Lisa. The brightest soul I have ever known. Her greatest gift was not just her writing, but her presence in my life–a glowing ember of warmth, light and love, illuminating the darkest corners of my existence.
In the days ahead, as we navigate the uncharted territory of a world without her, I find solace, peace and purpose, in the knowledge that her words will continue to guide us, inspire us, and most importantly to—keep saving us. She will keep saving the lives of those with nothing left to hang on to, but an L.J. Smith book.”—Jesa Lynn Kemp
